I got to meet Erin of Calivintage several years ago, before either of us had kids. At the time I was a little starstruck because she was a pretty big time fashion blogger and I loved her style, so much so that you could find more then a few pics of her gracing my pinterest page long before we met. But it was after she had kids that I really started to feel like we we're kindred spirits. I not only love her taste and seeing how she incorporates that into motherhood, I also love seeing her share more of her life with her little one's, and how she puts so much thought into the space she provides for them and the items she surrounds them with. Often times these seem like mundane choices but I really think they can create beautiful, special and calming spaces and moments in our little one's lives that can be so important in these early years. That concept is so near and dear to our hearts here at Bitte. So I was thrilled when Erin agreed to answer a few questions about blogging, motherhood and putting together a shared nursery, read on for more! Tell us a little bit about your blog, Calivintage and how you got started blogging?
I started my blog back in 2008, which really wasn’t so long ago in the scheme of things, but seems like an eternity in the blogging world. Back then, it was primarily a space for me to share my daily outfit photos because I was really obsessed with fashion, but didn’t have any other outlet for that particular interest. After doing it for a while, it somehow managed to gain traction and actually landed me my first job in the industry. Pretty soon, I was attending shows at NYFW and working with brands as sponsors of my blog. It was kinda like my own little Cinderella story! These days, my life has changed quite a bit and while I still love fashion, I’ve shifted the focus of my blog towards more of my lifestyle. I have two babies and a new house that I’ve been decorating and renovating, so I share a lot more of that now.
You seem to have effortlessly evolved your blog to include snippets about motherhood and your kids. Was that a conscious choice after having kids?
Yes and no! I tend to be a pretty private person, so before having my kids, I really only shared my outfits and didn’t talk very much about my personal life. Once they were born, I wanted to share more about motherhood and my life outside of fashion, but it definitely felt super awkward at first. It’s been a slow evolution, but now that I’ve gotten comfortable with it, I have a lot more fun with what I’m sharing online, and it feels more honest and open.
You recently had your 2nd little one, how has the transition been from 1 to 2?
It wasn’t too bad! A lot of people warned me about how hard it would be, so I was bracing myself for everything to be twice as hard. But honestly, all of the big changes in my life had already happened with the first. And you already know what to expect when the second one arrives. I think the hardest part is keeping them from waking each other up while they nap. But seeing the way Adam loves his little sister kinda melts away any of the challenges. I just love to watch them together.
I’ve loved watching you put your kids’ shared room together on instagram. What were your ideas and goals when working on the space?
Pretty early on, I knew that I wanted to send him to a Montessori school. My mom was an early childhood educator and had a lot of experience with some of the alternative approaches out there and they really seemed to mix well with my approach to parenting. So shortly after we enrolled Adam in a toddler program, I decided to fully embrace the philosophy and bring that into the home so he could have a seamless experience. The idea with the room is to shrink everything down and bring it to his level. The bed is on the floor so he can easily climb in and out. He has a low shelf with all of his “work” in baskets, so that he can independently choose what he wants to play with. He has a small table and chair, and all of his clothes are on a rack so he can dress himself.
Your kids, like their mama, have the best style! You dress them in the cutest vintage inspired styles. What are some of your favorite clothing brands for them?
Adam is in such an active phase of life that I keep things really simple for him: I love all of Izzy and Ferd’s printed t-shirts. My favorite pants are by Appaman. They’re like little work pants, but with a slim fit and lots of stretch. And he has all the classic shoes: Birkenstocks, Sperry Topsiders, Converse, Clarks. Then I top it all off with his signature cycling cap. I’ve had them custom made since he was an infant from a shop on Etsy called Niko’s Naptime.
Edie is still wee, so she’s mostly living in simple jersey knits. But when she gets a little older, all bets are off. I’ve got my eye on goods from designers like Misha and Puff, Soor Ploom, and Wolfechild. And I have a big stash of bonnets for her once she grows into them, like this one by Petite Soul.
What are some favorite toys and items that are getting a lot of love from your little ones at the moment?
Adam is 2-and-a-half, so he’s into a good variety of stuff now. Namely, he is obsessed with trucks, especially if they have functional parts like tows or platforms. But he also has a little wooden kitchen with play fruits, a toy fishing set, a baby doll and a little vintage-style pram. Plenty of blocks. Tons and tons of books upon books. He goes to the library at least once a week to fuel his ever-changing interests.
Edie is still small, but we have a little stash of baby toys. I love these art cards for babies and this set of stroller cards. I have a lot of soft toys like this Finkelsteins elephant.
I know you are a big fan of all things vintage. Are there items of your kids that carry a special story or significance to you? And on the flip side any items that you’ve purchased that you plan on keeping as family heirlooms to pass on to future generations?
I don’t really have any mementos from my own childhood, but I think one of the reasons I love vintage is because it’s timeless. For something to survive 30, 40, 100 years, it needs to be made with a lot of care and attention to detail. It’s not some throwaway piece. That’s what I look for when I’m buying things for my kids. Something that is quality made that will stand the test of time.
Any fun summer plans coming up for your family?
We have a few shorter trips to places nearby. We’re lucky because we live halfway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, so it’s not too hard to plan a day or weekend trip in either locale. I also hope to head up to Big Bear or Lake Arowhead before the summer is over!
